An important benefit of your membership is the lobbying efforts of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association. The NDSA keeps an eye on property taxes, property rights, international trade, health regulations and other issues affecting your business and bottom line by lobbying state and national lawmakers and advising administrative agencies.

You're busy calving cows, feeding calves and pushing snow, and that's why the NDSA is at the Capitol, on your behalf, representing your interests.

If you want to know what is going on in the legislature and what we're doing about it, subscribe to the weekly Legislative Ledger. It will update you on the bills we're tracking and give you a complete schedule of the hearings set for the week ahead. The ledger is free for the asking.

The Legislative Ledger is available via mail or email. Indicate how you prefer to receive it and include your name, address, email address, city, state and zip.

Note: Available only during the legislative session. Will be available January 2011.

Just a few of the important wins at previous Legislative Sessions were:

Vehicle registration - The NDSA was successful in getting all livestock trailers exempt from a vehicle registration fee increase and in reducing the proposed registration increase on other vehicles by $8.

Sales tax - The NDSA was successful in eliminating the sales tax charged on used farm equipment and parts, effective July 2002.

Fee hunting - The NDSA was successful in defeating legislation that would have required anyone who accepted any compensation for hunting (money, gifts, etc.) to become certified guides. And that's not to mention the other proposed requirements to issue sales tax receipts to hunters, to post your land as for fee hunting and to report your earnings to the Game & Fish Department.

Environmental Services - The NDSA was successful in obtaining $69,000 in grants to fund an association environmental services director position. This person will offer cattlemen and women free, common-sense advice and aid to remain in compliance with EPA regulations. Without the NDSA's work, members would have had to make up the cost for this important program.
